In the new home, two dogs will war in the yard.
The neighbor’s dog charging the fence. Ours lunging back.

They will do this every day. Years of straining the wood.
We warn each other: One day that fence will come down. And then?

The smell of the other, deeply familiar, hasn’t softened their intensity.
My love, we have lived here longer than we lived apart.

The dog’s flick tongues, taste air, retreat breathless.
And tomorrow will be more of the same.
